Don’t worry mama, I’ve got you. Here’s a quick DIY homemade dry shampoo that’ll work every time.
DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe:
- 1 Tbs cocoa powder
- 1 Tbs arrowroot powder (or cornstarch)
- 1/8 tsp activated charcoal (for darker hair)
- 5 drops of preferred essential oils (I like clove bud oil - helps keep the bugs away and combines well with the smell of the cocoa powder)
Notes/Commentary:
Once all ingredients are added, use a fork (or a cute tiny whisk if you have one) to blend everything together. Blend gently… unless you want powder all over yourself. If you added the optional essential oils, make sure those get blended in well.
To apply: I use a large soft face powder brush. Gently tap the brush to the dry shampoo (a little goes a LONG way) and tap into the root line of your hair. Tussle your hair with your fingers to distribute.
Fair warning: if you’re wearing a light colored top, I suggest covering up with a towel so any stray cocoa that rains down from your gorgeous hair doesn’t ruin your outfit (ya know… since you’re already running out the door).
If you have lighter hair, use less cocoa powder and replace with added cornstarch (in case you haven’t had enough coffee… instead of 1 Tbs cocoa powder and 1 Tbs of arrowroot/cornstarch, try 0.5 Tbs cocoa powder and 1.5 Tbs arrowroot/cornstarch).
If you have darker hair, try using more activated charcoal. Be frugal with it though - activated charcoal goes a long way. You can always add more, but you can’t take it out if you add too much. If you don’t have activated charcoal, use more cocoa powder and less arrowroot/cornstarch (try 1.5 Tbs cocoa powder and 0.5 Tbs arrowroot/cornstarch).
This does save well, so make ahead of time and store in a glass jar. To wash, just do your thing. This is safe to wash down the shower drain (and it’ll smell like a chocolate factory shower experience - you’re welcome).
Now your day 2 hair (or day 5 hair… no judgement here, I know you’re a busy mama) will look (and smell) incredible!
